Psychological Development Across the Life Cycle Part 2:
There are developmental challenges to be mastered throughout the life cycle from infancy through old age, as each stage of life builds on what has gone before. This course will explore these developmental tasks, and the issues resulting from failure to master them, from a psychoanalytic perspective.
Part I, 16 sessions in the fall, focused on infancy through preadolescence, from the establishment of psychic structures in infancy to the beginnings of the reorganization of those structures in preadolescence, and from the fundamental attachments in infancy to the complexity of significant relationships in preadolescence. Alternatives to a typical developmental path and the results of distortions in various developmental lines going forward are significant aspects of the course. We encourage lively discussion of readings, clinical material, and personal experiences. Part II in the spring semester will continue to build on these developmental concepts. We will explore the developmental tasks beginning in adolescence and continuing through the stages of adulthood to the developmental concerns of the end of life. Part II is open to those who completed Part I. CE Credits offered: CME Credits: 24 / CE Credits: 9 / NBCC: 24 clock hours / All others will receive a Letter of Attendance
This course will be limited to 10 students and is appropriate for clinicians at intermediate through advanced levels.
